Barstool Pizza Reviews’ Dave Portnoy visits the Jersey Shore
The Chiafullo family have been making pizza at their Italian restaurant in Long Branch for nearly 70 years, and their pie on Friday earned them a visit from a man who has become a household name among pizza critics.
The Nunzio Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant was one of many Jersey Shore locations visited on Friday by Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports and creator of One Bite Pizza Reviews.
“It was a surprise when he walked in,” said Lou Chiafullo, who owns the restaurant with his sister, Veronica Falivene. (Hear the story of their family’s restaurant in the video above). “We were so busy back then that I didn’t really get a chance to talk to him much. But he was a really nice guy, and he obviously has a lot of taste.”
Portnoy also reportedly visited Rosie’s Pizza in Point Pleasant Beach, Vic’s Italian Restaurant and Del Ponte’s Coal Fired Pizza in Bradley Beach, Squan Tavern in Manasquan, The Galley in Asbury Park, Marcua’s Tomato Pies and Three Brothers in Seaside Heights, and Zoni’s Charcoal Pizza. and Luigi’s in Middletown.
His reviews, in which he orders a whole pie, eats a bite, and rates between zero and 10, are typically posted on YouTube the week after a visit.

“We are honored that he has chosen our place to criticize,” said Chiafullo. “We have worked so hard over the years and strive to bring the public the best products. It is nice to be recognized for the main staple of our establishment, which is pizza.”
It was not Portnoy’s first trip to New Jersey. He recently visited The Pizza Terminal & Restaurant in Verona, Amore Pizza and Michael’s Pastaria in Nutley, Tavolino Pizzeria & Trattoria in Wallington, Santillo’s in Elizabeth and Patsy’s Tavern & Restaurant in Paterson.
